Data-to-Prevention

Not everyone in the District has the same risk of acquiring HIV.  We now have enhanced tools to identify people or groups of people who may be at higher risk of acquiring HIV, including people who have had multiple sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and those who may be associated with any cluster of people recently diagnosed with HIV.

DC Health will enhance the use of STD surveillance data to deliver HIV prevention, or “Data-to-Prevention,” by conducting the following activities:

  • Using STD surveillance data, develop new algorithms to identify individuals at high risk of acquiring HIV.
  • Create internal workflows to refer high-risk individuals to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).
  • Use motivational interviewing techniques to increase PrEP acceptance, initiation, and maintenance among high-risk individuals.
  • Identify and address reasons for hesitancy about PrEP initiation or maintenance.
